m = 1 + √2
m² = (1 + √2)² = 1 + 2 + 2√2 = 3 + 2√2
m² = 3 + 2√2
m⁴ = (3 + 2√2)² = 9 + 8 + 12√2 = 17+ 12√2

now,(m⁴ - 1)/m⁴
= ( 17 + 12√2-1)/(17 + 12√2)
= (16 + 12√2)/(17 + 12√2)
= (16 +12√2)(17-12√2)/(289-288)
= (272 - 204√2 -192√2-288)
= -16 - 396√2
