Answer:

Magnetic quantum numbers take integral values from -l to +l. If ml=2, then the l must be equal to 2 or greater than 2. So far, the highest possible value of l for all atoms in their ground states that are known to exist is 3. These l values, 2 and 3, are represented by the letters d and f, respectively.

Possible l values for ml is equal to 2

Explanation:

  • To define an electron completely some set of numbers are required which are known as Quantum numbers. These numbers are principle quantum numbers(n), azimuthal quantum number(l), magnetic quantum number(ml), spin quantum number(ms).
  • To define the subshell we require value l and to define the orbitals found in the subshell we require value ml.
  • For ground state,

          When l = 0 then value of ml = 0 i.e. s-subshell

          When l = 1 then value of ml = -1,0,+1 i.e. p-subshell

          When l = 2 then value of ml = -2,-1,0,+1,+2 i.e. d-subshell

          When l = 3 then value of ml = -3,-2,-1,0,+1,+2,+3 i.e. f-subshell

  • Thus, if ml is 2 then it could be possible that it will be in the d or f- subshell. So, the possible l values could be 2 or 3.
