GIVEN

m : n = 9 : 7 and m = p + q and n = p - q

TO DETERMINE

The value of p : q

EVALUATION

Here it is given that m : n = 9 : 7

Let m = 9k and n = 7k

Now

m = p + q and n = p - q gives

2p = m + n and 2q = m - n

Consequently we get

2p = 16k and 2q = 2k

From above we get

p = 8k and q = k

Finally p : q = 8k : k = 8 : 1

FINAL ANSWER

p : q = 8 : 1
