Let we have two numbers 2 & 8, and the mean proportion between those numbers be x.

In this case, 2:x : : x:8

Hence, = 8×2 = 16

or, x= 4.

Similarly, here we have two numbers x and 2 and the mean proportional is 4

In this case, x:4::4:2

or, x/4 = 4/2 = 2

Therefore, x/4 = 2

or, x = 2×4 = 8

Always remember if a,b and c are three numbers in continued proportion, then a:b::b:c (b is the mean proportional between a and c)
