➟Meiosis occurs for a reductional division and the chromosome no. in the gamete becomes haploid.

➟This is important to retain the diploid chromosomal number after fertilization of the gametes to form a zygote.

➟If the diploid no.is not retained then the zygote is unviable due to an incorrect set of chromosomes which are not associated with the species.
