if n=4 then possible no of sub shells will be

4s, 4p, 4d, 4f

and the no of orbital in 4s : 1

4p : 3

4d : 5

4f : 7

and there is only on electron having ms : -1/2 in each orbital

so no of electron in 4s( having ms = -1/2 )will be 1

similarly in 4p it will be 3 and in 4d it will be 5 and in 4f it will be 7

so total no of electrons if n=4 will be

1+3+5+7 =16 electrons
