The equivalent capacitance for  'n' number of equal capacitors each capacitance 'C' is connected in series is n / C.

Given: 'n' number of equal capacitors each capacitance 'C' is connected in series.

To Find: The equivalent capacitance.

Solution:

  • For 'n' resistances connected in series, the equivalent resistance is,

                         Rs = R + R + R + R + ... upto n times,

                              = nR

  • For 'n' resistances connected in parallel, the equivalent resistance is,

                          Rp = 1/R + 1/R + 1/R + 1/R + ... + upto n times

                                = n / R

  • Now, it is to be noted that the equivalent capacitance for capacitors in series and parallel are opposite to that of the equivalent resistance in resisters.
  • For 'n' capacitor connected in series, the equivalent resistance is,

                             Cs =   1/C + 1/C + 1/C + 1/C + ... + upto n times

                                   = n / C

  • For 'n' capacitor connected in parallel, the equivalent resistance is,

                              Cp = C + C + C + C + ... upto n times,

                                    = nC

Hence, from the 4th bullet point, we can conclude that,

The equivalent capacitance for  'n' number of equal capacitors each capacitance 'C' is connected in series is n / C.
