SOLUTION

GIVEN

n( X) = 19 , n(Y) = 12, n(X U Y) = 28,

TO DETERMINE

n(X ∩ Y)

EVALUATION

We are aware of the formula on set theory that

n(X U Y) = n( X) + n(Y) - n(X ∩ Y)

∴ 28 = 19 + 12 - n(X ∩ Y)

∴ n(X ∩ Y) = 31 - 28 = 3
