actually we know distance is always positive quantity . but in optics we consider negative , why ?
here meaning of negative sign of image distance is image form left side of lens from the pole of lens .
we treat this just like co-ordinate geometry . so , here image distance obtained is negative .

When image distance is: Negative-the image is formed infront of the lens(left side) and hence is a virtual and erect image Positive-the image is formed behind the lens(right side) and hence is a real and inverted image. Pls give 5 if it helped u!
