DPD stands for diffusion pressure deficit and can be defined as the reduced diffusion pressure of water in a solution or cell due to the presence of solutes in them. The two factors that determine DPD of a cell are:
- Osmotic pressure(OP)
- Turgor pressure/wall pressure(TP)
The relation between DPD, OP and TP is given below:
- DPD = OP - TP
In case of a flaccid cell,i.e. when water moves out of the cell, there's reducing turgor or wall pressure(becomes zero gradually) but due to high concentration of solutes in the cell, the osmotic pressure increases. Hence DPD also increases and becomes equal to OP .
