If (p - 1) , (p + 3) , ( 3p - 1) are in A.P., then

a2-a1=a3-a2

(p + 3)-(p - 1)=( 3p - 1)-(p + 3)

p+3-p+1=3p-1-p-3

4=2p-4

-2p=-8

p=4

Therefore, option (a) 4 is correct.
