$= > {p}^{2} + {q}^{2} + {r}^{2} - pq - qr - pr$

when p = 2 , q = -4 , r = 1,

$= > {2}^{2} + { - 4}^{2} + {1}^{2} - (2)( - 4) - ( - 4)(1) - (2)(1)$

$= > 4 + 16 + 1 + 8 + 4 - 2$

$= > 31$
