Its very easy , if one uses Addition as well as Multiplication theorems of probability . We know that if A, B are two independent events then by Multiplication theorem of probability P(AB ) = P(A) P(B) . Now by Addition theorem of probability :

P( A U B ) = P(A) + P(B) - P(AB)

= P(A) + P(B) - P(A) P(B) as A, B are independent.

= (1/2) + (1/3) - (1/2)(1/3) = 4/6 = 2/3
