SOLUTION

GIVEN

p ≠ 0, q ≠ 0 and the roots of x² + px + q = 0 are p and q

TO DETERMINE

The value of p and q

EVALUATION

Here it is given that p ≠ 0, q ≠ 0 and the roots of x² + px + q = 0 are p and q

Therefore

Sum of the roots = - p

⇒p + q = - p

⇒q = - 2p - - - (1)

Again

Product of the roots = q

⇒pq = q

⇒p = 1

From Equation 1 we get

q = - 2

FINAL ANSWER

Hence the required value of p and q are 1 and - 2 respectively
