By remainder theorem, reqd. remainder

= p(-1)

  = {x}^{3} - 2 {x}^{2} - 4x - 1 \\ = - 1 - 2 + 4 - 1 \\ = 0

Hence, r(x) = 0; which means that (x+1) is a factor of the given polynomial.

HOPE THIS COULD HELP!!!
