If pepsin is not released by the gastric glands then partial degradation of proteins will not take place.

  • The major function of the active enzyme pepsin is the partial degradation of proteins. The protein-digesting enzyme, pepsin is released by the chief cells of the stomach. When pepsinogen comes in contact with hydrochloric acid present in the stomach, pepsin is formed.
  • It partially converts the protein into proteases and peptones. Moreover, it also helps in killing pathogenic microorganisms.
  • Hence, if pepsin is not released by the gastric glands then partial degradation of proteins will not take place.
