Given: percentage error of a number is 3.264×10-4

To find: relative error

Solution:

Percentage error of a number is given by,

E(p) = E(a) × 100 / X         ___ ( 1 )

where E(p) is the percentage error

           E(a) is the absolute error

           X is the number

We can write (1) as:

E(a) = E(p) × X / 100         ____ ( 2 )

Relative error is given be,

E(r) = E(a) / X

E(r) = ( E(p) × X ) / (100 × X )       ( from (2) )

E(r) = E(p) / 100 = 3.264 × 10⁻⁴ / 100 = 3.264 × 10⁻⁶

Therefore,

Relative Error = E(r) = 3.264 × 10⁻⁶
