Answer:

By the way this has been asked I'm guessing it's a question for American Pharmacists but I will give you the UK version of the answer.

We historically did not notify the doctor and still wouldnt if presented with a paper prescription. However we now do a bulky amount of electronic prescriptions which are sent from the doctor surgery to a nominated pharmacy for the patient.l which is all done electronically. The doctors surgery are able to see which pharmacy has got the prescription. Once the prescription is filled it is then sent to the PPA (Prescription Pricing Authority) for payment. I am not sure if the doctor surgery receive a notification too when we do this. The only way I am guessing the surgery would find out if a particular prescription was filled was if a issue occurred and they tried to retrieve prescription sent to a pharmacy only to find it has been dispensed and paid for. There is also a tracker system which allows pharmacies and surgeries to track where a particular prescription is if the barcode for that prescription is known. This is usually printed on the side of the prescription.

If it's a private prescription which is usually on paper again the surgery woukdnt know specifically when or of it was filled unless the pharmacist was to contact them directly with any questions etc

Hope this is helpful!
