They too need nitrogen apart from oxygen that they get by photosynthesis.
To get this nitrogen they have to feed on insects because the nitrogen in the soil is in very small amount.

it is one of the plants that need some minerals which play an essential role in their survival and pitcher plant is one such plant which grows in swamp or bog areas where the soil is deficient in nitrogen mineral.
In order to fulfill the deficiency of nitrogen, they trap the insects and utilize their proteins. For this reason its called insectivorous plant also. It traps prey in rolled leaf that contains a pool of digestive enzymes or bacteria that help in the digestion of the trapped insects.
