If R2 and R3are the resistance of filaments of a 400W and 200W lamp designed to operate on the same voltage find the relation between R2 and R3.

Explanation:

The given power of the bulb with resistance R2 = 400W.

The given power of the bulb with resistance R3 = 200W.

We know that, Power = V * I     ( V = IR)

Therefore, Power = I^2R.

Thus, in the first scenario,

        400W = I^2R2

       200W = I^2R3

dividing both the equation,

 2 = R2 by R3

Thus, transposing,  

                         2R3 = R2.  this means , R1:R2 = 1;2.
