Solution,

Know that if the sum of the radii and the distance between the centres are equal, then the circles touch externally.

Know that if the difference between the radii and the distance between the centres are equal, then the circles touch internally.

Refer to figure (ii).

$\[\begin{array}{l} \Rightarrow d = 3.5 - 2.5\\ \Rightarrow d = 1\end{array}\]$
