Refractive index of glass with respect to the air = 1.5

To Find :

Solution :

• Refractive index measures the bending of ray of light while passing from one medium to the another

• Refractive index of water / Refractive index of glass = 1.25

            $\frac{\mu_{water} }{\mu_{glass} } = 1.25$

            $\mu_{glass}=\frac {\mu water} {1.25}\rightarrow Equation(1)$

• Refractive index of glass / Refractive index of air = 1.5

            $\frac{\mu_{glass} }{\mu_{air} } = 1.5$

            $\frac{\mu_{water} }{\mu_{air}\times 1.25 } = 1.5$

            $\frac{\mu_{water} }{\mu_{air} } = 1.5\times 1.25$

            $\frac{\mu_{water} }{\mu_{air} } =1.875$

 The refractive index of water with respect to air is 1.875.
