SOLUTION

GIVEN

The remainder obtained by dividing 5x² + mx + 15 by ( x - 5 ) is 90

EVALUATION

Let

f(x) = 5x² + mx + 15

g(x) = x - 5

For Zero of the polynomial g(x) we have

g(x) = 0

⇒ x - 5 = 0

⇒ x = 5

So the remainder obtained by dividing 5x² + mx + 15 by ( x - 5 ) is

 \sf = f(5)

 \sf = 5 \times {5}^{2} + (m \times 5) + 15

 \sf = 125 + 5m + 15

 \sf = 5m + 140

So by the given condition

 \sf 5m + 140 = 90

 \sf \implies \: 5m = - 50

 \sf \implies \: m = - 10

FINAL ANSWER

Hence the required value of m = - 10
