If reproduction is meant to be once then why are so many sperms produced

Because, Ovum ( female gamete) is far of reach of a sperm, and in order to reach it, there must be a large population of sperms produced to ensure fertilisation..

Another important reason is that, ovum has a outer protective covering that protects any intruder substance to fuse, therefore millions of sperms are produced at a time..
