Answer:
Given
Roots of quadratic equation x²-2(m+a)x+m²=0 are real and equal
To find
Value of m
Solution
When the roots of a quadratic equation are equal, then
b²-4ac = 0 --------(1)
In the quadratic equation
a = 1 (Coefficient of the x²)
b = -2(m+a) (Coefficient of x)
c = m²
Now we put the value of a,b and c in equation 1
[-2(m+a)]² - 4(1)(m²) = 0
4(m+a)² - 4m² = 0
4(m²+2am+a²) - 4m² = 0
4m²+ 2am + a² - 4m² = 0
2am + a² = 0
2am = -a²
m = -a²/2a
m = -a/2
Therefore value of m is -a/2.
Hope it helps you.
