SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

The value of a₄ when Sₙ = 3n + 4

EVALUATION

Here it is given that for a given arithmetic progression

Sₙ = 3n + 4

Putting n = 1 we get

Sum of 1 term

= First term ( = a )

= 3 + 4

= 7

Putting n = 2 we have

Sum of 2 terms

= First term + Second Term

= 6 + 4

= 10

∴ Second Term = 10 - 7 = 3

∴ Common Difference = d

= 3 - 4

= - 1

∴ a₄

= Fourth term

= a + 3d

= 7 - 3

= 4

FINAL ANSWER

The value of a₄ = 4 when Sₙ = 3n + 4
