The solubility product Ksp is (2) Ksp = s².

Given: The solubility of Agcl in water is s.

To Find: The solubility product Ksp

Solution:

  • The solubility product constant (Ksp) describes the equilibrium between a solid and its constituent ions in a solution. It is represented by,

                          Ksp = [A+]^{a} [ B-]^{b}                                    ........  (1)

where Ksp = solubility product constant,

           [ A+ ] = cation in an aqueous solution,

           [ B- ] = anion in an aqueous solution,

           a,b  = relative concentration of a and b.

  • The value of the constant identifies the degree to which the compound can dissociate in water. The higher the Ksp, the more soluble the compound is.

To solve the question we must write the equation of decomposition of AgCl into its respective ions.

                AgCl ⇆ Ag+ + Cl-

Now, with the solubility of AgCl given 's' so, at equilibrium, the saturated solution will be as,

                           AgCl ⇆ Ag+ + Cl-

                               1          0        0

At equilibrium:     1 - s       s         s           [ where s = solubility ]

According to (1), we get,

                        Ksp = [A+]^{a} [ B-]^{b}

                ⇒    Ksp  = s × s

                                = s²

Hence, the solubility product Ksp is (2) Ksp = s².
