Substances like salt and sugar do not have a definite shape when stored in a container because of their crystalline form. These substances usually have very tiny crystals which have a rigid structure and fix packed particles. Thus, the crystals are actually solids and thus the salt and sugar as a whole of a number of such crystals are referred to as solids. Hope this helps !!
