For square
Area = (Side)²

A₂/A₁ = (S₂/S₁)²
A₂ = A₁ × [(2S₁/3) / (S₁)]² ……[∵ Final Side = S₁ - S₁/3 = 2S₁/3]
A₂ = 4A₁/9

Decrease in area = A₁ - A₂ = A₁ - 4A₁/9 = 5A₁/9

∴ Area is decreased by 5/9

JunaidMirza: It’s wrong. Side is decreased “by” 3 times. It means final side is 2/3 times initial side.
JunaidMirza: Side length (S) decreased “by” 1/3 times means final side length = 2S/3 and Side length (S) decreased “to” 1/3 times means final side length = S/3
JunaidMirza: Leave it. You’ll understand it in your higher classes.
