Let original side = x cm. Then, new side = (x + 5) cm.

(x + 5)^2 - x^2 = 165

<=> x^2 + 10x + 25 - x^2 = 165

<=> 10x = 165-25=140

<=> x = 14.

Hence, the side of the square is 14 cm.
