IF SMALL BITS OF PAPER ARE PLACED ON A DRUM,WHY DO THEY JUMP WHEN THE DRUM IS STRUCK ?

This is what I think, I don't know if it is right or wrong.
On top of a drum we place a stretched cloth, which increases the surface tension. When we place bits a paper, (which is light in weight). and beat on the drum the vibration waves make the bits of papers to jump.
Vibration Waves are stronger in stretched material.
