A continuous decrease in speed of a body is deceleration.

  • The speed of a body is the distance travelled by it in a given amount of time. Speed increases when velocity is positive, and this gives rise to acceleration.
  • As the speed of the body decreases, it's velocity also decreases and the acceleration becomes negative or undergoes deceleration or retardation.
  • Hence, when the speed of a body decreases, it is said to be in deceleration.
