so, distance between these point will be
AB = √[ (a-c)²+(b-d)²]
So,

[√{(a+2)²+(-3-a)²}]² = 85.....(1)
=> (a+2)²+(-3-a)²=85
=>(a²+4+4a+9+a²+6a)=85
=>(2a²+10a+13)=85
=>2a²+10a - 72=0
=> a²+5a-36=0
=>a²+9a-4a-36=0
=>a(a+9)-4(a+9)=0
=>(a-4)(a+9)=0
(a-4)=0 or (a+9)=0
=> a= 4 or a = -9
