During the night no photosynthesis takes place but respiration still take place so diffusion of respiratory gases is required. We must understand that stomatas are never completely closed. During night there still remains some space for the diffusion of carbon dioxide and oxygen. No organism can survive if respiration stops.

if stomata remains closed for long the plant will die because it doesn't have any medium to throw or exchange gases other than the stomata!
