p = - 49

  • The sum of roots of the equation is given 7. Now we know that sum of roots of the quadratic equation ax^{2}+bx+c = 0 is  -\frac{b}{a} .
  • Hence comparing this to the given equation we get a = 7 , b = p and c = -q. So the sum of roots is -\frac{p}{7}
  • So according to the problem -\frac{p}{7} = 7, which implies p = - 49
