given,

sum of the squares of zeroes of the quadratic polynomial x^2 -8x +k is 40

let roots of the equation be a,b

so,

a^2+b^2=40

sum of roots according to equation is 8

a+b=8

squaring on both sides we get,

a^2+b^2+2ab=64

40+2ab=64

2ab=24

ab=12

so product of roots is 12

and according to equation product of roots is k

so k=12

hope this helps you
