Squaring both sides, we get,

tan4x−2tan3x+tan2x=1

⇒tan4x−2tan3x−tan2x+2tanx=1+2tanx−2tan2x

∴tan4x−2tan3x−tan2x+2tanx+1=2+2(tanx−tan2x)=1+2=4 using (1)
