(side) {}^{2}  =  {x}^{2}  + 6x + 9

(x + y) {}^{2}  =  {x}^{2}  + 2xy +  {y}^{2}

 {(side)}^{2}  =  {(x)}^{2}  + 2(3)(x) +  {(3)}^{2}

  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: {(side)}^{2}  = (x + 3) {}^{2}

 \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: side \:  = x + 3
