The first thing to note is that flame and smoke rise so on a person stood upright the obvious will happen. The advice is to hit the ground and roll. This will smother the flames and extinguish the fire. If there is a coat or blanket immediately to hand this will help by providing a further cover over the flames. It is the action of smothering the flames that reduces the ability for oxygen to reach the fire.
