Answer:

let the cost of oranges = X

let the cost of apples = y

5 oranges = 5x

3 apples = 3y

cost of 5 oranges and 3 apples = 30 Rs

= 5x + 3y = 30 (1st equation)

2 oranges = 2x

4 apples = 4y

cost of 2 oranges and 4 apples = 26 Rs.

2x + 4y = 26 (2nd equation)

subtract 2nd equation from 1st equation

5x + 3y = 30

2x + 4y = 26

4( 5x + 3y = 30)

3( 2x + 4y = 26)

20x + 12y = 120

6x + 12y = 78

20x + 12y = 120

-6x - 12y = -78

14x = 42

X = 42/ 14

X = 3

put the value of X in 2nd equation

2x + 4y = 26

2( 3) + 4y = 26

6 + 4y = 26

4y = 26 - 6

4y = 20

y = 20 / 4

y = 5
