Given :-

  • The denominator of a fraction exceeds the numerator by 2. If the numerator is decreased by 1 and the denominator is increased by 3

To find :-

  • Required fraction

Solution :-

Let the numerator be x then denominator be (x + 2)

  • If the numerator is decreased by 1 and the denominator is increased by 3, the value of the resulting fraction is 1/2.

As per given condition

→ (x - 1)/(x + 2) + 3 = ½

→ x - 1/x + 2 + 3 = ½

→ x - 1/x + 5 = ½

→ 2(x - 1) = x + 5

→ 2x - 2 = x + 5

→ 2x - x = 2 + 5

→ x = 7

Hence,

  • Required fraction

  • Numerator/denominator = x/x + 2

  • 7/7 + 2 = 7/9
