Let the probability of success of an event = x
probability of failure = y
A/Q,
As we know that the sum of the probabilities of success and failure of an event is always equal to 1.
i.e, x + y = 1 ----------------(i)
Now,
x - y = 3/17 --------------(ii)
Add both the equations.
2x = 1 + 3/17
or, 2x = (17 + 3)/17 =20/17
or, x = 10/17
and y = 10/17 - 3/17 = 7/17
Therefore probability of success = x = 10/17
and probability of failure = y = 7/17
probability of failure = y
