The distance between the sun and earth is the perfect distance for life to exist on earth. This range of distance from the sun which supports life is called the blue zone.

It is said that Venus was also earlier in the blue zone but later it got affected by sun's gravity and wandered out of the blue zone. The result we know is that Venus's water and liquid methane evaporated to form the extremely dense atmosphere it has presently.

Mars is a planet with a very less dense atmosphere and it's geographical features are not constant. It has 38% gravity as compared to earth's gravity.

Therefore, if the distance between earth and sun is halved the earth will have a similar condition as Venus as it will come out of the blue zone.
