Concept Introduction:

Distance between two points are given by  \sqrt{(x2-x1)^{2} +(y2-y1)^{2} }.

Given: Distance between the points P (k, 5) & Q (8, -3) is 10 units

To Find:

We have to find the value of, k.

Solution:

According to the problem,

Distance between the points P and Q is \sqrt{(x2-x1)^{2} +(y2-y1)^{2} }

10=\sqrt{(k-8)^{2}+ (-3-5)^{2}  }

100=(k-8)^{2} +64

36=(k-8)^{2}

⇒±6=k-8

k=14 or 2

Final Answer:

The value of k is (a) 2 or 14.
