Dear student,

We know by the formula for gravitational forces that,

               F = G m₁m₂/r²

or,            F ∝ 1/r²

Consider the original distance to be r. Let the new distance be r' which can be denoted as per given as;

        r' = 100% + 25%r

        r' = 125%r

        r' = 5/4 r

So, putting the given resultant value of r' in the formula, we obtain;

          F ∝ 1/r²

          F ∝ 1/ (5/4)²r

          F ∝ 4²/ 5² r

          F ∝ 16/25 r

          F ∝ 16/25 × 100

          F ∝ 16 × 4

          F = 64%

So, % change in the the force is given by;

      Δ F% = Foriginal - Fnew

      Δ F% = 100 - 64

      Δ F% = 36

Hence, % change in the the force is 36%.
