then original area = x × x = x²

new side = x + 50% of x = x + x/2 = 3x/2

new area = (3x/2)² = (9x²/4)

increase in area = (9x²/4) - x²

= (9x²-4x²)/4

= (5x²/4)

increase % in area = (5x²/4) × 100/x²

= (5/4) × 100

= 5 × 25

= 125%

ie the area has been increased by 125%
