If the earth did not have atmosphere, would it's average surface temperature be higher or lower than what it is now? explain

The infra-red radiation emitted by the earth are retained by the earth's atmosphre due to the green house effect and this keeps the earth warm. If the earth did not have atmosphere, its average temperature would have been low.
