Submarine earthquakes, commonly known as underwater earthquakes, are caused due to underwater plate tectonic movements and are powerful enough for their effect to be felt on the surface of the ocean.

Tsunamis, underwater volcanic eruptions and sinkholes are common effects of these earthquakes. Pressure differences created by underwater earthquakes, cause gigantic waves to sweep on to the shores, and this results in tsunamis. The release of magma through cracks and fissures on the ocean floor creates underwater volcanic eruptions. Sinkholes are created when large tracts of land suddenly submerge. This is because their continental plates have shifted or have been moved due to underwater disturbances.
