If the equation (m^{2}+n^{2})x^{2} -2(mp+nq)x+p^{2}+q^{2}=0 has equal roots then mq = np

  • Given equation is

               (m^{2}+n^{2})x^{2} -2(mp+nq)x+p^{2}+q^{2}=0  --------(1)

                a = m^{2}+n^{2},b=2(mp+nq),c=p^{2}+q^{2}

  • Roots of (1) are equal

                ⇒ Discriminant = 0

                ⇒ b^{2}-4ac=0

                ⇒ b^{2}=4ac

                ⇒ [2(mp+nq)]^{2}=4[(m^{2}+n^{2})(p^{2}+q^{2})]\\

                ⇒ 4[m^{2}p^{2}+n^{2}q^{2}+2mpnq]=4[m^{2}p^{2}+m^{2}q^{2}+n^{2}p^{2}+n^{2}q^{2}]

                ⇒ 2mnpq=m^{2}q^{2}+n^{2}p^{2}

                ⇒ m^{2}q^{2}+n^{2}p^{2}-2mnpq=0

                ⇒ (mq-np)^{2}=0

                ⇒ mq-np=0

                ⇒ mq=np
