If earth did not tilt and orbited in an upright position around the sun, there would be minor variations in temperatures and precipitation throughout each year as Earth moves slightly closer and farther away from the sun. Earth would be warm at the equator and cold at the poles.

When a hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, that region receives more sunlight and becomes warmer, while the hemisphere that is tilted away receives less solar energy and is cooler. The Phenomena of Day and Night occurs due to rotation of earth. Varying lengths of Day and Night is attributed to the tilt of the Earth on its axis.
